This week on the Way of Champions Podcast, John talks with Jay Dicharry, one of America's leading physical therapists and a board-certified Sports Clinical Specialist. The conversation explores many great topics, including how we shouldn't be teaching running to young children, why cutting volume short but keeping intensity high is a more effective practice strategy, and the importance of understanding how delaying sport-specialization will create greater skill as an athlete.

Highlights from the Discussion:

  • Where have we gone wrong with teaching movement?
  • Something to consider as a coach, “Am I teaching kids to move well?"
  • How should we be teaching running to young children?
  • What typically causes injuries while running?
  • The importance of adding single leg exercises to strength programs
  • What makes Jay want to pull over when he sees someone running along the road?
  • Why cutting volume short but keeping intensity high is a more effective practice strategy
  • Using analogies for running posture: marinate puppet vs. military posture
  • Why is “elbows behind hips” a great place to start with fixing running posture?
  • Why is foot strength important to running?
  • Myth-buster alert: Training on an unstable surface is not an effective strategy in strengthening ankle and foot
  • Injuries in kids (knee pain, back pain, etc) that could have been avoided
  • "All professional athletes take time off from sport, and are good at multiple sports."
  • How playing other sports helps a child to develop skills that will make them a better over-all athlete
  • 80% of athletes who play collegiate sports played other sports in high school
  • "Single sport athletes are more likely to get hurt later on in life."
  • "Coaches, what are you doing in preseason to prevent tissue injuries?"

Jay is a certified coach through both the United States Track and Field Association and the United States Cycling Federation, and certified Golf Fitness Instructor through Titleist Performance Institute. He has a competitive history in swimming, triathlon, cycling, and running events on both the local and national level, and has coached athletes from local standouts to national medalists. He is excited to share this passion with the team at Rebound, and explore the Pacific Northwest with his family on knobbies, skis, boards, and soles.
